Chapter 6

Hendrix knew he was being reckless. Hell, he was acting like a complete and total idiot, who hadn’t learned his lesson. Nonetheless, he couldn’t help himself. It wasn’t every day that fate handed him a second chance on a silver platter. He could hardly believe his eyes when Jolie walked in, looking exactly the way she did when he fell in love with her three years ago, at a bookshop not too far from where his real estate company was.

He liked to go there sometimes and relive that moment. But after she left, it became too painful, every corner filled with memories of their love. Yet, he stubbornly held onto the belief that one day, she would come back to him and he hadn’t even realized it until today. All she had to do was look up at with those big green eyes of hers, and he acknowledged that he’d never stopped loving her.

Against all odds and reason, his heart still belonged to her, and they were being given a second chance, so he wasn’t about to waste it. Granted, it felt weird to realize that Jolie was now a widow, but he could see in her eyes that the loss of Kyle wasn’t something that affected her deeply, not in the way it would most people. Her heart wasn’t broken and, though she might have been grieving in her own way, he could tell that their relationship had run its course.

Yes, there was a part of him that wondered if he should perhaps be a little more careful; little time had passed since his death and it could be considered inappropriate, but he didn’t care. So much time had already been wasted, and he didn’t want to waste one more second pretending like he didn’t feel the way he did.

Jolie was the one that got away and, now, she’d come back to him. Yes, she hadn’t been looking for him but, then again, he hadn’t expected her either. He hadn’t even acknowledged that there were still feelings left for her, until she told him the truth.

Truth be told, he did feel for her, which was why he couldn’t offer his condolences. He knew she’d be able to see right through him and if there was one thing Jolie hated, it was hypocrisy and pity, so he didn’t offer either. Hendrix didn’t bother with the typical clichés. Instead, he opted for silence, deciding not to speak ill of the dead, out of respect. Regardless of how he felt about the jackass, the man had passed from this world and it felt wrong to air out his grievances, at least publicly.

In private, he could do what he wanted. He wasn’t sorry to see the man go. In fact, he was thrilled that, now, he had the chance to woo Jolie and win her back. He hadn’t even thought about what to do for dinner, hadn’t even realized the thought was in his head, until he saw her glance around the apartment and imagined her standing there alone at night, with no one talk to.
